The wines of Lake Garda: the best selected wineries open for visits and tastings
Lake Garda wines encapsulate with merit the different nuances of our territory and the wineries successfully capture the essences and flavors, with care, dedication and character.
For your wine tasting: 130 Lugana wineries and 60 Valtenesi wineries
There are 130 Lugana wineries and 60 Valtenesi wineries; each one possessing its own character, style, and creativity; therefore no Lugana will be the same as another and the same goes for the Chiaretto and the Groppello.
Each winery has its own family history, on occasion even century-old, and their own unique approach to interpreting its work and the fruits of the vine.
It is for these reasons that we invite you to discover as many wineries as possible: each of them has a story to tell, a different emotion to convey, and a unique memory to take you with.
We have chosen three of them to start you off with, each having in common a long history and ability to maintain traditions while at the same time the ability to reinvent wines and production methods.
Art lovers and wine: contemporary art where you least expect it, Cantina Ottella.
An emotional journey between wine, art and architecture: the Ottella winery maintains its wines, from Lugana to Valpolicella, from Amarone to Rosè, among artworks from the Biennale, Mediterranean patios, hydrangea gardens, leading up to an incredible barrique cellar, where you will find a site specific work of art..., an illuminated wave reminiscent of the way wine moves as it is poured into a glass, as it branches out over the rows of barrels below.
Mediterranean patios, works from the Biennale of Venice and an incredible barrique cellar
Walking through its courtyards and making your way up and down the stairs through secret rooms, you will pass from an inspiration of modern art with installations of lights and colored glass bubbles, to gardens of hydrangeas that open up surprisingly to Mediterranean patios with lemon and olive trees. From here you overlook the incredible barrique cellar where there is a site-specific artwork suspended from the ceiling gently undulating above the barrels ... a sinuous and bright wave, its form reflects the way wine moves around a glass as it is poured into it: a show for the eyes and the heart.
And after an unforgettable experience of art and beauty, you can partake in a tasting of their fine wines, typical of the Garda region, whites and reds such as: Lugana, Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella, and Rosè.
For a tasting or an aperitif you can sit in their living room replete with armchairs, fireplace and a window overlooking the beautiful colorful garden. Here the landscape, art and nature filter through the rooms and courtyards, in a unique and evocative embrace for each of your five senses.
A delicate varietal, a unique history: The Selva Capuzza winery and an unusual Tocai, an exceptional wine from the Lake Garda region
Podere Selva Capuzza invites you to plunge into the history and pleasant nature of Desenzano, to discover a rare and endangered varietal, which the Formentini family has been nurturing and cultivating for more than 100 years, the Tuchì. Their San Martino della Battaglia, “Campo del Soglio” is familiar as a Lake Garda wine, yet has its own unique qualities carried in its aroma, the strength and dedication to the territory.
Immersed in the countryside and in the nature, the Selva Capuzza winery safeguards a precious treasure: one of the smallest “Denominations of Origin” in Italy, intrinsic to the Tuchì grapes, whose varietal is so delicate that it risks extinction.
"Trust what you feel..." is the only way to taste wine in an authentic way and without pretense.
Because Selva Capuzza's wines have no excesses they are genuine and authentic, just like the territory on which their vineyards are based and rooted in. A land rich with history, ranging from the origins of our lake, as evidenced by the stones along the estate to the church of San Donino, the oldest church in Desenzano, passing through the battlefields of San Martino and Solferino, where once stood two emperors and a king.
Leaving the lake behind, the car swaying through the sinuous curves of the roads that hug the hills alongside fields of honey-colored sheaves and emerald vines.
You pass through woods and long natural arbors, where the foliage of the plants intertwine from one side of the road to the other, coming out beyond the green, with the Tower of San Martino overlooking you from above.
Part of the journey here is the wines you will taste. Here in this historic estate, with passion, dedication and determination, the Formentini family act as the guardians of the history of this territory and of a wine that is not only unique to Lake Garda but is also a vine that is at risk of extinction; that of the Tuchì grapes, from which the San Martino della Battaglia Campo del Soglio was conceived.
It is one of the smallest, “Denomination of Origin” in Italy, at risk of extinction, but here it has found its guardians.
The Formentini family, in fact, after having passed the hundredth harvest, among the 6 autochthonous vines, has decided to protect and carry on this delicate wine as well.
An unpretentious wine, like all the wines of the winery, it does not show off, but with grace and discretion plants itself into your senses and remains there to warm your soul and life.
Six autochthonous varietals of Lugana, San Martino and Garda Classico :
Look at the 6 autochthonous grape varieties: Turbiana, Tuchì, Groppello, Marzemino, Barbera and Sangiovese, which give life to Lugana, San Martino della Battaglia and Garda Classico wines.
You open the bottle and while the wine flows in the glass, you can already perceive from its aroma its stubborn history and unrelenting quest to preserve the unique gifts of these hills and this territory, to protect their identity and tradition.
It takes hard work, because the vine is fragile and the grape is delicate, it requires more care and attention, more strength and love; and it is for this reason that when you taste it, you take in much more than the aromaticity and mineral notes to delight your senses, you take in the sensation that only passion and heart can give, and that the wine, like the fruits of our Lake Garda territory, know how to convey.
